The Cosy Knitwear Guide: How to Choose and Style Jumpers This Winter
Roll neck, crew or high neck? Oversized or fitted? Plus Christmas jumpers that are actually wearable, and how to keep your knitwear looking new.
Knitwear is the backbone of a British winter wardrobe. A good jumper works on its own on a crisp weekend, under a coat on the commute and over a shirt or dress when you want to look a little smarter. Here is how to choose the right one, and how to keep it looking good all season.
Pick your neckline
- Roll neck or turtleneck: the warmest option and the one that looks most polished under a coat. Try the Aldora oversized soft knit turtleneck.
- High neck or funnel neck: a softer alternative if a full roll neck feels too snug. The Maelora contrast stripe high neck jumper is an easy everyday pick.
- Crew neck: the most versatile. It layers neatly over a collared shirt and works under almost any coat.
How an oversized jumper should fit
Oversized styles are cut with extra room on purpose, so you usually do not need to size up to get the relaxed look. Stick to your normal UK size and check the size guide on the product page. The shoulder seam should drop slightly below your shoulder, and the hem should still sit around your hip rather than your thigh, unless it is designed as a longline style.
If you want to wear a jumper under a fitted coat, choose a finer knit or a regular fit so the coat still closes comfortably.
TipTuck just the front of an oversized jumper into high-waisted jeans or trousers. It defines your waist without losing the cosy shape.
Three easy ways to style it
- Weekend: chunky roll neck, straight-leg jeans and trainers or ankle boots.
- Office: a fine knit over a shirt, with tailored trousers and loafers.
- Evening: a soft jumper over a slip or midi skirt, with boots and gold jewellery.
Colour-block designs such as the Maristel cashmere-feel colour block turtleneck do the work for you, so keep the rest of the outfit plain.
Christmas jumpers you will actually want to wear
A festive knit does not have to be loud. Classic winter patterns look charming all December and will not feel out of place on a walk or at a family lunch.
- The Brimley reindeer pattern jumper is a traditional Nordic-style favourite.
- The Pippa Christmas tree knit is playful but still easy to style with jeans.
- Prefer a dress? The Sigrid reindeer snowflake knit dress works with tights and boots for a cosy one-piece outfit.
Planning to wear it on a specific day? Allow 6–13 business days for processing and delivery, as set out in our Shipping Policy.
Keep your knitwear looking new
- Always check the care label before you wash anything.
- Wash inside out on a gentle, cool cycle, or by hand.
- Dry flat on a towel and reshape while damp. Hanging wet knits stretches them.
- Fold, do not hang, so the shoulders keep their shape.
- Remove any bobbles gently with a fabric comb or de-piller.
- Wear it a few times between washes and air it out instead. Knitwear lasts longer with less washing.
Buy the jumper you will want to pull on every cold morning, not the one that only works for a single occasion.
