How to Choose a Winter Coat That Lasts: A UK Buyer's Guide
Puffer, wool-blend or faux fur? Short or long? Here is how to pick a winter coat that suits British weather, fits over your knitwear and still looks right in March.
A good winter coat is the one piece you will wear almost every day from November to March. It goes on the school run, the commute, the dog walk and the dinner out, so it is worth choosing with a little care. This guide walks you through the questions we ask ourselves before we add a coat to the BAHRIZ collection.
1. Start with how you will actually wear it
Before you think about colour, think about your week. A coat for a 40-minute walk to the station has a different job from one that mostly travels between the car and the office.
- Lots of time outdoors: look for a hood, a high collar and a length that covers your hips or more.
- Mostly indoors, quick dashes outside: a lighter or shorter style is easier to carry and will not leave you overheating on the train.
- Evenings and smart occasions: a tailored wool-blend coat or a faux fur jacket dresses up an outfit instantly.
2. Puffer, wool-blend or faux fur?
Quilted puffers are the practical favourite for British winters. They are light for their warmth, usually easy to care for and shrug off a drizzly morning. A long, hooded puffer such as the Ceridwen long quilted hooded coat covers you from collar to knee, while the Averil faux fur hooded puffer adds a soft trim around the face for colder days.
Wool-blend coats are the smarter choice. They hold their shape, layer neatly over a jumper or blazer and look at home in the office. For men, the Percival tailored wool-blend overcoat and the longer Alaric slim fit long coat are easy pieces to wear with both jeans and suit trousers.
Faux fur is all about texture. It works best as a statement layer for evenings and weekends, like the Lavinia cropped faux fur jacket over a dress or knit.
Quick rule of thumbChoose a puffer for warmth and weather, a wool-blend for polish, and faux fur when you want the coat to be the outfit.
3. Length matters more than you think
A longer coat keeps you noticeably warmer because it covers more of your body, and it makes outfits look more pulled together. Hip-length styles are easier for driving and cycling. If you only buy one coat, a mid-thigh to knee length is the most versatile.
4. Get the fit right over your knitwear
Most fit problems with coats come from trying them on over a T-shirt and then wearing them over a chunky jumper. When you check the size guide on a product page, think about what you will wear underneath.
- Shoulders: the seam should sit on or just past your shoulder bone.
- Sleeves: they should reach the base of your thumb with your arms relaxed.
- Movement: you should be able to cross your arms without the back pulling tight.
- Between sizes? If you like to layer thick knitwear, the larger size is usually the safer choice.

5. The details that make a difference in British weather
- A hood you can actually pull up saves you on windy, drizzly days.
- A high collar or funnel neck means you can leave the scarf at home.
- Pockets deep enough for a phone and keys.
- A neutral colour such as black, navy, camel or cream works with almost everything you own.
6. Look after it and it will last
Always follow the care label inside the coat. In general, hang wool-blend coats on a wide hanger, brush them rather than washing them often, and let puffers dry fully before you put them away. A little care at the end of the season means your coat is ready to go again next November.
The best winter coat is the one you reach for without thinking, every single morning.
